SHOP STORIES: SPICE LONDON

GERARD WITH THE ANKLE BOOTS CAELUM ECRU

From the hustle and bustle of Oxford Street to the relaxing tranquility of Primrose Hill, Gerard Levy has lived and breathed the world of shoes almost his entire life. Our London partner for the last two years, Gerard not only acts as our agent in the United Kingdom and Ireland via the Gil Agency, he is also one of our clients through his shop Spice in London Park.

Spice is unlike any other shop: it is a reflection of his passion and exclusive dedication to footwear. Today, Gerard opens the doors of Spice to tell us more about his project.

Who is Gerard and how would you define yourself?

As a person who has spent virtually my whole adult life surrounded by shoes!

When did you open Spice London, and Gil Agency, what inspired you to take the leap and open your own business?

At first, my mum had a market stall selling plimsolls in the 1980s. Then she opened a shoe shop in what was, then, an unknown Primrose Hill. Although I wanted to be a graphic designer, I couldn’t get into college. So I left school and went straight into work. But I didn’t want to work in my Mum's shop, I didn’t want that take. First job…. Working at 16 years old in a busy shoe shop in Oxford St.

After a few years though I came back and with the knowledge I gained I started running the shop. My Mother has since retired, but my sister and my wife still work in the shop today. The shop has won and been nominated for several awards over the years.

I also run my own shoe agency, plus created PLFM my own shoe trade fair a few years ago. I eventually sold it to pure London. In fact, creating that show all only own was probably one of the highlights of my career.

What do you think our philosophy brings to Spice London?

As a shoe buyer and agent, I only choose certain brands that have a real “story” For me, I have to like the whole collection.

Of all our designs to date, which have been your favorites?

The handwriting must be right. But if I was to pick one style that I like the most and epitomizes Naguisa, it would be SOC. I think it's the heart of the collection.
