Who is Gerard and how would you define yourself?
As a person who has spent virtually my whole adult life surrounded by shoes!
When did you open Spice London, and Gil Agency, what inspired you to take the leap and open your own business?
At first, my mum had a market stall selling plimsolls in the 1980s. Then she opened a shoe shop in what was, then, an unknown Primrose Hill. Although I wanted to be a graphic designer, I couldn’t get into college. So I left school and went straight into work. But I didn’t want to work in my Mum's shop, I didn’t want that take. First job…. Working at 16 years old in a busy shoe shop in Oxford St.
After a few years though I came back and with the knowledge I gained I started running the shop. My Mother has since retired, but my sister and my wife still work in the shop today. The shop has won and been nominated for several awards over the years.
I also run my own shoe agency, plus created PLFM my own shoe trade fair a few years ago. I eventually sold it to pure London. In fact, creating that show all only own was probably one of the highlights of my career.
