BASIC TUTORIAL FOR VISIBLE MENDING

MATERIALS YOU WILL NEED FOR A VISIBLE MENDING

The art of embroidery is a historical treasure that has been passed down from generation to generation and which continues to inspire many artists even today. At Naguisa, the nostalgia and romantic notion of a slow, tranquil life that is intrinsic to this technique has motivated us to integrate the art into our Olivia collection by means of an embroidery capsule collection.

By reflecting on the timeless nature of embroidery, and how it has been used as a form of self-expression and a tool for sustainability, we were inspired to delve deeper into this art and share with you an interesting tutorial on visible mending that you can implement to mend your favorite knit sweater. Because a pulled stitch or small hole is no reason to throw out a favorite piece of clothing!

Materials you will need for the tutorial:

· A tapered needle (we recommend size 18)

· Scissors

· 2 different colors of thread

· Something hard and rounded on which to rest your mending project (such as a cup or bowl)

CENTER THE ARE YOU WANT TO MEND

FIRSTS STITCHES

First, center the hole or area you want to mend over the bottom of the cup or bowl and make a knot with the rest of the fabric so it won't get in your way. Make sure the fabric is relaxed, not too stretched nor too loose, so your mending doesn’t deform the fabric.

Now we can create the warp. This first part involves creating a series of stitches that go across the hole from top to bottom parallel to the fabric strands. Thread your needle and get started!

*Remember to start this weaving a few centimeters outside or away from the 4 sides of the hole or defect.

CHOOSE A DIFFERENT COLOR TO CREATE THE WEFT

Now, to create the weft, or the threads that run parallel to the rows of the knit fabric and perpendicular to the warp, thread your needle with a different color thread.

Weave your needle above and below the threads. At the end of the row, pass the needle below the stitch of the same row where you started and one column to the left of the edge of the warp.

CREATING TEXTUTES WITH STITCHES

Working from left to right, anchor the weft by passing the needle below the stitch directly above the stitch you just made. Weave through the hole, this time passing the needle under the threads you previously passed over.

Upon reaching the right side of the hole, pass the needle from left to right over the stitch. Just above where you began the weft. Switching direction, pass the needle from right to left below the stitch directly above and weave through the hole, once again passing the needle below the threads you previously passed.

FINAL RESULT

Continue weaving the weft by repeating the above steps until you complete the row just below the upper portion of the warp. To complete this step, cut the thread of the weft, leaving a 5-cm long end.

Once you’ve finished, remove the bowl, turn the fabric over, and use the needle to weave the ends of the threads into the backside of the fabric. Cut the leftover bits and voilà! Now you can show off your new sweater.
