GIVE NAGUISA FOR CHRISTMAS: TUTORIALS TO WRAP THEM

FUROSHIKI TECHNIQUE MATERIALS

If you’re looking for a unique yet elegant way to wrap your gifts this Christmas season, we recommend watching some tutorials inspired by the Japanese techniques of Origami and Furoshiki.

Our first suggestion is a Japanese tutorial on how to wrap gifts without tape. This origami-inspired method is easy to follow and allows you to wrap gifts in an elegant yet durable manner, and with minimal materials.

What you need: Wrapping paper and scissors.

ORIGAMI TECHNIQUE MATERIALS

First, determine how much paper you will need. The easiest way to do this is to ‘roll’ the four sides of the Naguisa box over the paper which you’ve laid out on a flat surface. Mark the paper with a pencil and then cut along its length, folding the sheet diagonally to form a triangle. This provides a square that is the right size. If you want to use a ruler, here are the box measurements for the following types of shoes: for winter espadrilles, sneakers and shoes, you will need a 26 x 26 inch paper. For ankles boots and chunky boots, 33.5 x 33.5.

Next, place the shoe box in the center of the triangle and fold the sides of the paper around the box. First take the lower corner and place it over the box. Run your fingers over the lower right fold to create another fold, this one laterally. Repeat this on the other side.

Once the gift is covered by 3 of the sides, hold the paper with one hand and, using the index finger of the other hand, mark the ridges of the leftover paper.

Lastly, fold this leftover paper, as if it were an envelope, over the box and close it by folding the top corner and inserting it into the space created by the previously folder paper. Voilà! You now have a perfectly wrapped Naguisa box.

If you like, you can decorate it with ribbon or write a note on a card.

MATERIALES TÉCNICA FUROSHIKI

The next technique is called Furoshiki, a traditional Japanese method for wrapping items in an elegant and practical manner. This method uses a rectangular piece of cloth that is then folded and tied in different ways to wrap items. Furoshiki has become popular as a sustainable gift wrap option.

What you need: A single piece of fabric or a cloth scarf measuring 80 cm x 80 cm.

First, lay the fabric or cloth on a flat surface and place the Naguisa box on top of it diagonally. For this example we used a leftover piece of linen, but you can use any fabric you want, one with a print, or a thicker material. Just remember that the thinner the fabric, the easier it will be to work with.

Take two opposite ends of the fabric and tie them together in a small knot. Bear in mind that this side will be the back of the gift, so tighten the knot to make it as flat as possible.

Next take the other two ends, pull them upwards to hide the folds of the fabric internally. Lastly, tie the two ends in a knot for a perfectly wrapped gift!

Add a little extra detail or personalize the gift and it is sure to be a hit.
