BOOK CLUB: SEMILLAS
As we look to the new year and all the goals we hope to reach, we’d like to recommend a book that embodies optimism for a better world. In SEMILLAS, created and self-produced by Cristina Camarena and Vanesa Freixa, the authors present various solutions for building a better tomorrow.
We invite you to join our book club and discover how we can all contribute to meaningful change in our communities and our countries. There’s never been a more important time to uphold our shared values.
The pandemic gave us a unique opportunity to think about what kind of future we want. As we found ourselves face to face with a situation requiring immediate action, we became more aware of the many environmental crises lurking right around the corner.
Emerging from the restlessness, fear, helplessness, and anger that swept over us in 2020, we came together. We strengthened our communities and we supported purpose-driven brands and people. We channeled the negativity and transformed it into a flood of creative ideas.
SEMILLAS embodies this sense of ambition and courage. In the book, authors Cristina Camarena and Vanesa Freixa present various solutions for building a better tomorrow.
Journeying from individual to collective actions, SEMILLAS lays out a path for progress toward a more just, inclusive world for future generations. Indigenous cultures, forest schools, social justice, eco-feminism, and agroecology represent ways of sowing “little big seeds” that bring us closer to regeneration.
At Naguisa, we’ve always defended these values. Our commitment is based on a belief that the future is local: our products started out as a regenerative project for several communities of jute workers in our country. As our collections expanded, we’ve seen that many footwear craft guilds have aged, dwindled, and disappeared, taking with them the wisdom of true masters of the trade. As they disappear, that seed that could have been planted in someone younger and less experienced is also lost.
That’s why over the years, on our blog, social media, and website, we’ve introduced you to the people behind each pair of shoes. We've showed you the care with which they’re crafted, and hopefully we’ve been able to inspire an appreciation for the beauty of this fading trade.
We thank SEMILLAS (and Cristina and Vanesa) for the perspective they've shared in this book. We invite you to join our book club and discover how we can all contribute to meaningful change in our communities and our countries. There’s never been a more important time to uphold our shared values.
