SHOP STORIES: PUHA

Today we'd like to introduce you to Taam, the owner of Puha Shop . Along with Saïd, Taam puts her love and care into every detail of her small shop in Utrecht . It's clear she's passionate about her work and design, which is why she selects each of Puha's pieces to showcase the work of artists and artisans, primarily from the Netherlands.

Who is Taam? How would you define yourself?

Hi, my name is Taam, I am a curious and social creature who loves to create and help creators get their art and designs seen and out into the world. I have a background in fine art (school) and illustration and I love textiles, materials, colours and skillful techniques.

When did you open Puha Shop? What inspired you to take the plunge and open your own business?

Puha Shop opened its doors 14 years ago, in 2010. Said, Chantal and I started the shop as three creative enthusiasts who felt that there was not enough presence in Utrecht for products made by artists fresh out of art school. It was a small 30m2 shop in the middle of a side street in the centre of Utrecht.

The first year, Chantal left Puha to return to her passion for photography, so Saïd and I continued with the shop, we grew and after 3 years we moved to a bigger and better location on a busier street.

We work with around 70 different designers, mostly local and some small sustainable brands . We sell clothing, jewellery, shoes, ceramics, illustrations, textiles and artwork. We love to create a bridge between designers and customers who visit Puha. We like to share the origin of each design with visitors and it is very likely that you will meet a designer in the store.

Do you have any good moments from these PUHA years that you will always remember fondly?

In the past we loved the little festivals we would sometimes organise in our shop. Having a musical performance in our window, like a stage, with the shop full of people enjoying the music. It was fun.

I also remember the toughest time of the coronavirus. It was amazing that people came to Puha to support us and buy designs just to help us survive. I am grateful for the positive energy they brought and for letting us know that we were important. It was a tough time, but we came out stronger :)

Of all our designs to date, which have been your favorites?

We love all of Naguisa's designs. Since we're a small shop, we keep a small selection. In winter, we stick with Abra ; they're fun, warm, and durable for the rainy weather in Holland. In summer, we opt for espadrilles , with new colors and surprising designs every season.
